During his youthful days in South Down, Charles Russell pledged his ambition to become the first Catholic Attorney-General in England. He was to realise that dream twice, before being appointed Lord Chief Justice for England and Wales.

Killowen Old Hall is a two-storey building which is situated to the front of Killowen Primary School, a fine example of locally-built heritage. The exact age of the building is not known, but it is thought to be much older than the Old Killowen Church (now the school)which was erected in 1772-1779.
