GROUP VISIT - HILL OF ARMAGH - Wed. 25th March. 2009

Ten members took part in a two-fold visit to The Hill of Armagh.

Firstly we went to Armagh Public Library, the oldest library in Northern Ireland, founded in 1771 by Archbishop Richard Robinson as part of his plans to establish a university and to improve the City of Armagh

The 1911 Census records for Antrim, Down and Kerry are now available online. Publication of the other counties will follow mid 2009.

AGM March 2nd 2009

The Eighth AGM took place in Killowen Church Hall on March 2nd. 2009 after the usual monthly meeting. Aidan Murdock, outgoing Chairperson, called on the officers to vacate their seats and invited Leo Murphy to take the chair for the election of officers and committee for the coming year.

Leo congratulated everyone on their work and regular attendance at the monthly meetings and especially Finola for all her hard work behind the scenes  in her position as secretary, he also thanked Aidan in his capacity as chairperson over the last few years for all his help and guidance.  The position of Vice Chairperson was also vacant as Mark had other commitments in the coming year, Martina as deputy secretary was also stepping down from her position. Leo thanked them both for the time they had given to the Society. He went on to say that this will be a busy year for us all with the publication of our second book in Nov. and encouraged everyone to have their material ready for the deadline end of June.

Most of the members have their chosen subject well in hand and all finished articles are to be with the secretary by the end of May. 2009. Should anyone like to have an article or old photos included in our book, please contact us via our website.

P.R.O.N.I Visit   Feb. 19th 2009

Some members who had never been to the Public Record Office were delighted at the chance of this visit to give them an introduction to the records available to the Public. The day began with a brief historical overview and a number of examples taken from the wide range of sources available.  The trip was designed to give first time visitors an idea of the material held there as well as allowing them to “break the ice”.
