This year Killowen Primary School celebrates a centenary.  In 1910 the existing Killowen School moved from its then premises to the refurbished old Chapel - a few yards away.

It simply “moved next door”.  However, it would be wrong to assume that 1910 was the actual establishment of this place of learning, when records show that the school was in existence since 1819. The following extract is taken from The Ordnance Survey of Parishes of Down compiled by the Institute of Irish Studies, Queen’s University of Belfast and The Royal Irish Academy, Dublin.

The extract reads:

Killowen School is a good slated building 3 miles from Rostrevor on the old road between Rostrevor and Kilkeel.  Established in 1819 the income from pupils per year was £8.00. Salary of master was £16.00 pa. The Scheme of work was as follows:

Intellectual Education, Spelling and Reading books of Education Society, Authorised version of Testament and Moral Education.  The school was visited by the Protestant and Catholic clergy of the Parish.

Number of pupils were as follows:

Males under 10 years of age - 25, from 10 years of age to 15 years of age -19, over 15 years of age - 8, total males 52.

Females under 10 years of age - 12, from 10 years of age to 15 years of age - 9, total females 21. In total there were 73 pupils, of which 1 was Presbyterian and 72 were Roman Catholics. The master, James Cull was Roman Catholic.

This record and others would therefore clarify that Killowen School, in nine years time will be celebrating 200 years in existence. For more indepth information and school photos dating back to 1890’s see Volume 1 and Volume 2 of “Killowen - Lost in the Mists of Time”.
